Modalities I
Modalities focuses on the various applications used to compensate or remediate any occupation. This includes uses of adaptive equipment as well as remedial techniques that will help a person with a disability learn to function more independently.
High Point Coffee House
Three of my fellow peers and I went to High Point Coffee House and evaluated their building and its compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. This required us to first learn the regulations that ADA expects of businesses, but it also provides an opportunity to really see what challenges people with disabilities may experience. Really thinking about the detail of how high things are, is there enough room to get a wheel chair in AND turn it around, can they reach the soap and paper towels, can they see the cashier while ordering a drink, etc. I deffinitely benefited from this activity by becoming more aware of the needs of others. If I'm more aware of these issues, I can become an advocate and share that interest with others.

Physical Dysfunction I
This course focuses on the many aspects of physical disability.
Service Project
A group of 4 of us went to the Tenth East Hills Senior Center to present an overview of occupational therapy to that community and help them gain an understanding of what OT can do for them and how they might benefit. This particular population was mostly geriatric, but there some middle aged folks there than could advocate for their families as well.
This was a fun activity because it forced me to get out into the community and talk with people about what we do in OT. Like any kind of teaching/ reflection, you must know what you are talking about really well when presenting it to a group. You REALLY need to know your stuff when that group is not your peers. Your peers will be nice and avoid questions that they think may put you on the spot (most of them). The general public doesn't think that way, and they shouldn't. Our group had to be able to answer questions on the fly and refer to each other, or Cheryl, when we didn't know how to answer something. It was a strong learning experience.

I was also able to participate in tearing down used wheelchairs for a company called CReATE. All the wheelchairs they make are provided to those in need. I really enjoyed getting dirty and helping with the manual work. I was a mechanic for a while and enjoy returning to that work for short periods of time.
Fall 2014 - Level 1 Fieldwork
I attended my first level 1 field work with a company named Independence Rehab. They are a company that provides OT services to locations as needed. The services become very regular and routine. The file below provides an example of the service project I completed. I created a PVC tree. This tool can be used for fine and gross motor, cross body, memory/ cognition, as well as standing balance and endurance.
