Modalities III Lecture/ Lab
Modalities III continues to evaluate the methods and techniques that occupational therapy uses to help clients live life to its fullest using a client centered and holistic approach.
Service Learning project
Many of the projects that we learned in this class were donated to people in need once completed. I learned a lot of useful activities throughout this class including woodwork, knitting, crocheting, embroidery, quilting, and many more. These activities and skills are important because it gives me the ability to use these tasks as interventions if a client shows interest in that particular area. In the end, both my clients and myself benefit because I am more capable in my profession because I have a higher level of experience and expertise, and the client benefits because I can help them achieve goals that they have helped create.
Professional Issues II
Professional issues II is a continuation from the previous course in which we focus on the ability for practitioners to be aware of, and use, the philosophies, policies, and procedures related to occupational therapy. The education and experience gained in this course will benefit me and my clients by helping me understand adapt a therapeutic use of self as well as understanding the rights and needs of clients.
One of the most important skills I obtained in this class is the ability to read and understand evidence based practice (EBP) articles. I initially thought of these files and a necessary evil that I would rarely be forced to dredge through after graduation. I have evolved to a perspective that vies evidence based practice articles as tools that can, and will, drive the treatments and interventions that I will use. As a new graduate, I will only have a basic understanding of the OT practice. EBP will be a way for me to take advantage of other professional's research to benefit myself and my clients.

Geriatrics
Geriatrics is the study of people as they age and the interventions that may help reduce dysfunction, mitigate negative side effects, and increase quality of life.
One of the larger projects that I completed in geriatrics is an evidence based practice group presentation about schizophrenia. We each found an EBP article about schizophrenia and a particular treatment that was used. We evaluated those articles and put them together into a cohesive discussion about the effectiveness of the methods used.

Geriatrics Fieldwork Level 1
I was placed at the Work Activity Center. This is a day treatment program for adults with disabilities. My supervisor was Debbie Brooks. I spent fall break completing my fieldwork, which allowed me to complete my hours within the same week. The Work Activity Center only works with clients from 9 am to 2:30 pm. I was able to volunteer a total of 24 hours over 4 days with a few extra hours at home working on my service-learning project. The number of participants changes from day to day, however I chose to work in a room that typically had around 25 clients each day. There is no OT being done at the WAC, however, they do have an exercise specialist that engages certain clients in an exercise program that a PT has established specifically for that client. The clients are all adults and have a wide range of ages from 18 and up. The frame of reference that I saw completed the most would fall under biomechanical if any. Like I said, there is no OT being done, but between the exercise specialist and the line staff, they get some range of motion and overall exercise, depending on the activity, to help with circulation, strength, endurance, etc.
The project that we were asked to complete involves creating a way to remediate or habituate the IADL of doing laundry. The Work Activity Center provides day treatment serviced to adults with disabilities. Throughout the day they offer lots of training, work hardening, life skills, etc. We were asked to provide a method for their clients to work on completing laundry to help them be more independent with self care tasks. Overall we spent approximately two to three hours discussing and researching the project. Research time would include working on it at home.
