Communication
Comm 1010: Elements of Effective Communication
Effective communication is undeniable one of the most important aspects of how we conduct ourselves and, to a degree, what level of success we are capable of. I have been studying communication on a superficial level for a few years now. I work as a substance abuse counselor, and run groups with teenage boys about communication. We talk about word choice, tone, timing, volume, speed, and non-verbals. Having that foundation helped me feel like I understood a lot of the content from this class. I will be able to take the extra information from this course and create new ways to teach communication skills. I will also be able to keep myself a little more accountable about my own interactions. Hopefully, I'll be more aware of how I want to be understood and will help other receive my message accurately.
Favorite Assignment
My favorite assignment of this course was the career research paper. It pushed me outside of my comfort zone, which was not my favorite part. However, I did enjoy the opportunity to talk with a physical therapist and get a better idea about his job and how it varies from occupational therapy. When I began this semester I didn't have a strong understanding of the technical difference between the two professions. After that interview and having completed the Intro to OT course, I know what direction to take my education.

Psych 100: Invitation to the Life Span
During this course we learned about the multitude of issues that a person might experience in their life time. From birth to death we discussed biology, disease, mental health, socioeconomic status, relationships, etc. While the class was broad, I feel like we did a great job getting into a lot of detail within specific topics.
Reflection on the Section 1 Person Paper
This assignment required me to write about a person, real or not, and discuss aspects of their life from birth to adolescence. I chose a fictional character, but incorporated various aspects of my own life. It was interesting to have to examine 18 years of life and wrap it into four to six pages. The assignment was challenging when trying to decide what issues from the text to include. There were so many possibilities such as being born with a twin, having to be adopted, a substance abusing mother during pregnancy, bullying, friends and environment, etc. It was tempting to just write a story about someone who didn't have to experience any of this. Obviously, this would have been a cop out.

College Algebra
Math 1010
Math 1010 covers numerous mathematical tortures. For most, this is an easy class and they would breeze through it with bright eyes, dreaming of their soon-to-be days in a higher math class. For I, this was not so.
Project #3 (extra)
Optimizing an Advertising Campaign
This project provided an opportunity for me to look at how math could be applied to a real world situation. It was a great example of how algebra could be used to get a better understanding of creating a specific look at how to be successful in a marketing situation with a specific budget and utilizing two specific media tools. Although I didn't work in a group, I did need to ask others for help along the way. Brainstorming with others helped me find solutions and think about things from a different point of view then I might not have on my own.
I enjoyed being able to figure out certain aspects of the linear equations. It was nice when the numbers worked out evenly. It made me feel like I was on the right path, since most math equations at this level seem to resolve nicely if done correctly. Overall, I liked this assignment, and look forward to following projects.

College Biology
Biology 1610/ 1615
College Biology is a prerequisite for any further biology courses for a good reason; it gives you the foundation of all biological understanding. Biology reminds me of math in that when you understand it, it's very fun, and when you don't, you're ready to light things on fire.
Reflection on Research Paper
Reading this article was a challenge by itself. The cache of articles provided were all quite a bit above my understanding. However, this one, about the development of the chambers of the heart was interesting, so I figured it would help me stay invested.
