This was my first semester studying occupational therapy.  I was given the opportunity to shadow three different occupational therapy professionals and ask questions about their experiences.  My first shadow was with a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant or COTA in a transitional rehabilitation center.  The second was at the hand clinic at TOSH.  My final was working with an OTR in home with pediatrics.

Anatomy

Prior to getting accepted in the OTA program you must complete anatomy.  This was a difficult, but fun course.  I had initially planned to take a few courses with anatomy but decided against it which turned out to be a very smart idea.  I was able to put all of my effort into the one class and walk away with an A-.  Since you must have a B to apply to the program, and some don't get that after two tries, I was happy with my final grade.

Aspin Ridge Transitional Rehab.

Aspin Ridge is a location that helps people that don't need a full hospital, but are not well enough to go straight home.  They also may not have anyone at home to help take care of them.  The standard duration of care is anywhere from a few days to a few months depending on needs.  Typical clientele is late adulthood.  I observed a COTA under an OTR.

In Home Early Intervention

This took place in the Park City area.  I observed an OTR.  The first client was in her office, and the rest were in home.  I felt lucky that I was able to see such a wide range of work she performed, even though everyone was early intervention, birth to age three.

TOSH Hand Specialists

Hand specialists have a higher level of training and expertise in their specific area.  The main, but not only, focus is the hand, wrist, elbow, and arm.  They work on a variety of injuries and issues; anything that an arm might need.  Here I was able to observe about five different OTR's and one COTA.
